Sculpture

Late in my third year in the Fine Arts program at Queen’s University, way back in 1990, I stumbled upon something that really clicked for me: kinetic sculpture. Building big wonky Jean-Tinguely-influenced machines became my focus for the next several years at Queen’s and then at OCA. The skills that I developed in making sculptures at that time provided me a direct avenue into my props career, where my mechanical intuition mixed with my burgeoning fabrication skills were a valued combination. For example, see “GP’s Mail Sorting Machine” from Once Upon a Hamster.

In the past eight years, I have returned to sculpture, largely by participating in Frank Holtz’s “Artistic Welding” workshops with Off the Wall and the metal shop access that his course offers.
